Top Nutritional Supplements For Bodybuilders - Is Glutamine Right For You

Amino acids are one of the key building blocks of muscle tissue and glutamine is one of the most abundant amino acids found in the human body and, according to some fitness experts, is the most important in the process of building strength and muscle mass.

Glutamine can be found naturally in many food sources including poultry, fish, beef, chicken, and most dairy products. The most potent forms of glutamine are those that are found in over the counter supplements.

Fitness experts and bodybuilders alike believe glutamine glutamine is one of the most important muscle building supplements and for a very good reason. One of the primary benefits of glutamine is that it preserves existing muscle tissue you have built. When you train intensely, your muscle tissue naturally begins to breakdown. Your muscle tissue also begins to breakdown rapidly when your body is protein deprived and while you are sound asleep at night.

Muscle breakdown is actually a normal process but if you are training hard and adhering to a proper diet then your body will also be creating new muscle tissue in response to the stress caused by resistance training. You can actually calculate your net muscle gains by taking the rate of muscle breakdown and subtracting the rate of muscle growth. Glutamine assists in building muscle by reducing the rate of muscle breakdown and creating greater net gains in overall muscle mass.

In addition to building muscle, glutamine also helps strengthen the immune system. Boosting the immune system is a great thing because the immune system tends to weaken as a result of constant and extensive weight training. Your body will recover quicker and you will actually get sick less often as a result of including glutamine supplements in your bodybuilding diet plan.

The best times to take glutamine supplements are approximately thirty minutes after you have completed your workout and around 30 minutes before bed time. After a very intense workout your body's glutamine levels can decrease by as much as fifty percent and in order to replenish these levels, your body will usually begin draining glutamine from your muscle tissue. Because muscle tissue tends to naturally break down during sleep, taking 3-5 grams of glutamine prior to bedtime can help minimize the breakdown and at the same time also bolster your body's natural levels of growth hormones.

Bodybuilding Supplements Review - Do Bodybuilders Actually Need To Take Supplements?

If you read through the latest issue of just about any muscle building or fitness magazine you will likely be bombarded by more than 150 ads for a wide variety of dietary supplements. According to the advertisements, every bodybuilder needs to take mass quantities of supplements in order to achieve spectacular muscle gains. But as you surely know, you can not trust what you read in advertisements. The question then is, "are supplements really necessary for big muscle gains?"

This question really depends on how you interpret the word "necessary." Supplements of just about any variety are not necessary for you to become bigger and stronger. High tech supplements are simply not necessary for the average weight lifter to experience substantial muscle gains, regardless of what glitzy ads would have you believe. If you spend 10 or more hours a week training and adhere to a strict diet high in protein and carbs and low in saturated fat and simple sugars you will almost certainly experience an increase in muscle size.

Now lets look at this question another way.

If by the word "necessary" you mean "...necessary to achieve maximum size and strength" then the answer is absolutely yes. Many supplements have been scientifically shown to offer superior muscle gains than bodybuilders who take no supplements at all. Building muscle and spending hours at the gym is very hard work and it therefore seems to make sense to spend an extra few dollars a week on supplements in order to maximize your muscle mass gains.

Ultimately your decision to take supplements depends upon whether or not you want to achieve your maximum size and strength and, if so, how much you are willing to pay to achieve your desired results. Muscle building supplements can be very pricey and it is not uncommon for bodybuilders to spend hundreds of dollars a month on dietary supplements.

The supplements that are the most common amongst bodybuilders are:

1. Muscle Milk Protein
2. Creatine Monohydrate
3. Multivitamins
4. Amino Acids

Also, if you would like to save as much as 50% on supplements then you should take a look on Ebay. An Ebay membership is free and you can easily save a thousand or more dollars a year by buying your supplements on Ebay as opposed to your local vitamin store.

Anabolic Steroid Alternatives - How To Naturally Increase Testosterone Levels

Testosterone is the infamous male hormone that causes and maintains several physiological processes including muscle growth. Increasing the body's testosterone levels has been shown to rapidly build new muscle tissue. For decades, bodybuilders the world over have used synthetic testosterone called steroids to accelerate their muscular development and maximize the efficiency of their workouts.

The only problem with this approach to muscle gain is that synthetic testosterone like steroids have many side effects associated with prolonged use including severe emotional swings a.k.a "roid rage", hair loss, development of excessive body hair and body acne, as well as potentially life threatening kidney, heart, and liver problems. In other words, while steroids can help you achieve huge muscle mass gains these gains come at a terrible price; your health and well-being.

The amount of testosterone circulating through the body can naturally be increased by training in a certain way coupled with adhering to a strict diet appropriate for gaining muscle. Testosterone actually occurs naturally in both men and women just as the female hormone estrogen also occurs in both sexes. But testosterone of course occurs at much higher levels in men than in women.

Here are few ways to naturally increase your testosterone levels without resorting to taking steroids:

1. Leg exercises - Exercises that focus resistance on the legs like squats and deadlifts will actually stimulate the body to produce more testosterone than normal. If you make it a habit to exercise your legs twice per week you should experience higher levels of testosterone within a couple of weeks.

2. Intensify Your Workouts - You should perform your workout routines in such a way that you can't do additional reps at the end of each set. This means that when you have finished each set you should not be able to do one more rep. A set should never consist of more than 10 reps total and 6 is more or less ideal for boosting testosterone levels and maximizing muscle gains.

3. Zinc Supplements - Zinc is an inexpensive and naturally occurring mineral that is found in all kinds of things including cold medicine and even pennies Zinc also occurs naturally in oysters, beans, nuts, whole grains, dairy products, and several kinds of seafood. A couple of zinc caplets a day is all you need to start boosting your testosterone levels.

4. Reduce Alcohol Consumption - In addition to loading your diet with hollow calories and carbohydrates, alcohol has a tendency to reduce zinc levels which has the corresponding effect of reducing testosterone levels.

5. Monosaturated Fats - Not all fats are bad for your health. Monosaturated fats are actually good for you and typically have the effect of boosting testosterone levels in men. These kinds of fats can be found in high concentrations in most vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds

6. Avoid Stress - Depending on what you do for a living, avoiding stress may be easier said than done. But studies have shown that reducing stress levels has the effect of increasing testosterone production. If you can not reduce your stress level attempt to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night as more sleep will help you better deal with stress and thus increase your testosterone production.

The Truth About Building Muscle – A Few Secrets To Getting Ripped!

It's impossible to exaggerate how angry I get when I see bogus ads and sales letters claiming to offer divinely inspired muscle building secrets for a one time fee of $20, $30, or even $40 or more. If you're looking for a quick fix to getting ripped in a flash then you are doomed to lose money to these phonies and are likewise doomed to never really get anywhere with overall muscle building efforts.

The truth is (and you're not going to like this) getting really ripped and looking great takes a heck of a lot of work, patience, strict dieting, and dedication. But the great news is that the average male has the potential to look really great and achieve massive muscle gains. Never believe for a minute though that there is some secret sauce recipe that will allow you to look like a bodybuilder in only a few months and only require a couple of hours of work per week.

That being said, here are a few secrets to getting really ripped that I have used over the years to pack on more than 30 pounds of lean muscle:

1.Sleep – Getting the right amount of sleep every day is probably the easiest task in the world and yet is one of the most overlooked by muscle building enthusiasts. You should aim for 9-10 hours of sleep per day following each and every intense workout. A few naps here and there certainly don't hurt either.

2.Supplements – There are millions of supplements out there which claim to do everything under the sun. The only ones you really need are: Muscle Milk, Creatine, Amino Acids, and multivitamins. If your joints have a tendency to get sore after a workout you may also want to include joint soother supplements into the mix.

3.Protein – Protein is to muscle building what cement is to building sturdy homes. You need to get 1.5 grams of protein per day per pound of body weight e.g., if you weigh 150 pounds you will need around 225 grams of protein per day.

4.Occasional Light Weight Workouts – It's very unsafe to do heavy weight workouts each and every time you go the gym. Aside from being painful and very debilitating, a serious injury could keep you out of the gym for months which could in turn easily erase you muscle gains. To prevent this from happening, you should do 1 light weight workout for every 3 heavy workouts . A weight is considered light if you can do10 or more reps.

5.Workout Partner – Your own laziness can be easily be your biggest obstacle in building muscle. A workout partner who shares your common goals will keep you and them on track and provide you both with encouragement when each of you need it. Yes, even bodybuilders need positive encouragement from time to time.

Muscle Building Supplement Reviews – Which Supplements Will Help You Gain Muscle?

While I'm not exactly sure how many many muscle building supplements there are currently on the market, judging by the latest issue of Muscular Development I'd guess that there are tens of thousands of different supplements available. And all of these supplements claim to be the greatest thing since sliced bread and promise “amazing” results. With such a massive array of supplements to chose from, actually choosing the right supplements can be a very difficult and time consuming endeavor.

I have been working out regularly for more than 4 years and during that time have spent thousands of dollars on all kinds of different supplements. Some worked, some were a joke, some gave me diarrhea, some increased my endurance, and some tasted so bad that I couldn't swallow them. Ultimately I have enough experience taking supplements that I have a pretty good idea which ones you should take to maximize your muscular development.

If your goal is to pack on lean muscle in the shortest time possible, here are my picks for must have muscle building supplements:

1.Muscle Milk – With this stuff you can get as much as 50 grams of whey protein in a single serving. Not only that, muscle milk tastes great and comes in dozens of different great tasting flavors. 4 scoops of this stuff mixed with 1% milk will add an additional 100 grams of protein to your diet per day along with other essential nutrients. You can actually save 20-30% off retail by purchasing muscle milk on Ebay (my favorite online store).

2.Egg Whites – Egg whites are an excellent source of muscle building protein. I have met more than a few bodybuilders who consume 30 egg whites each and every day. I suggest about 6-10 egg whites per day which you can actually mix right in with your protein shake and not even taste them.

3.Amino Acids – These are very inexpensive and reduce the time that your muscles need to recover from intense workouts and also help minimize soreness. 3 of these taken every day is all you need and they can be purchased for less than $7 for a 15 day supply at your local vitamin store.

4.Multi-Vitamins – It's always a good idea to make sure your body has the proper amount of vitamins and nutrients necessary for proper health. If you focus too much on muscle building food and supplements you could become vitamin deficient which could reverse your muscle gains and even make you sick which could keep out of the gym.

5.Sugar-Free Energy Drinks – This is optional, however, I've found that consuming a sugar free energy drink during an intense workout boosts my stamina, strength, and endurance. Right now the two best tasting sugar free drinks on the market are Red Bull and Monster. You can also drink the normal energy drinks if you'd like but remember that you will likely be consuming more than 50 grams of sugar and hundreds of extra calories.

Creatine Dietary Supplements – A Must For Any Serious Weight Lifter

In the early 1990's, creatine monohydrate powder was released to the market as a muscle building supplement. Creatine then quickly became popular with weight lifters and has remained very popular ever since. Creatine is an amino acid that occurs naturally in meat, fish, poultry, and even nuts. Creatine is actually a major component of muscle tissue and can help quickly repair tears in the muscle tissue caused by weight lifting.

Protein, as you surely know, is an essential muscle building nutrient and amino acids like creatine are the building blocks of protein. Contrary to popular belief, creatine is not a steroid and it has no serious side effects associated with prolonged use. As with all supplements though creatine can indeed be harmful in excess quantities, so always be sure to check the serving label as creatine supplements tend to differ in dosage.

Generally, with most creatine powders it's customary to take about 20 grams for your first 5 days and from then on about 5-10 grams per day, 5 days per week. Again, creatine tends to differ in strength depending on the brand you select, but generally speaking about 40 grams per week is a fairly good amount of creatine to have in your muscle building diet.

With about 40 grams of creatine in your diet you can expect to have:

1.Increased power during workouts – You will have the extra energy you need to bust out those extra few reps.
2.Weight gain – Once you start taking creatine you will very likely start to gain weight almost immediately. This is mainly due to to the fact that creatine increases water retention which can actually make your muscles look bigger.
3.Faster muscle growth – You will be able to train harder and see results faster than you would without creatine. Some studies have even shown that creatine can increase lean muscle mass by as much as 30%.

Here are a few creatine supplements that you can get for under $20 for 1000 grams (2.2 pounds)
at most nutrition and health food stores :

1.Now Foods Creatine Monohydrate
2.Universal Nutrition Creapure
3.Dymatize Creatine Monohydrate
4.AST Micronized Creatine
5.Prolab Creatine Monohydrate

What kinds of creatine have you tried? Your comments are always welcome...

Discount Nutritional Supplements - 3 Ways To Save Money On Supplements

Nutritional supplements make a great addition to just about any diet. Whether you are training for muscular development or endurance, taking the right supplements can help you get into the shape you want fast and also help keep you there. Personally, I feel that every athletes diet should include plenty of protein, creatine, and amino and fatty acids, all of which can be purchased in the form of nutritional supplements.

While highly effective in promoting muscle growth and increased strength nutritional supplements can be very expensive. In fact , it's not uncommon for some muscle building enthusiasts to spend hundreds of dollars on supplements each and every month.

Because I have not always had an abundancy of money over the years I've learned a couple of tricks to save money on supplements.

Here are 3 ways you can find discount nutritional supplements:

1. Ebay - This is easily the number one way you can save money on all of your nutritional supplement needs. If you are not currently a member of Ebay then you should seriously consider becoming one as membership is free and can only save you money. You can find nearly any supplement you can dream of and save as much 50% in the process. The only problem is that may you have to wait up to a week and half to receive your purchase which means you need to place your order about 10 days before your supplements run out.

2. Coupons On Ebay - Like I said, Ebay is a really fantastic money saving site. If you can't find the supplements you're looking for you might be still able to find dozens of discount coupons for just a couple of dollars. I once purchased 30 Met-Rx 50% off coupons for a mere $5 including shipping and handling.

3. Sam's Club/Costco - Chances are good that you probably have one of these discount warehouse stores within 20 miles of your home. You can save money here buy simply buying in bulk quantities. For example, I can purchase a 2 month supply of Monster energy drinks that would normally cost $63 for just $32 (49% savings).

4. Monthly Sales - Supplement stores like GNC and The Vitamin Store have sales at least once per month on all or most of their supplements. This means that if a supplement you want is not currently on sale, check back few times over the next week or two and it will likely be 20-30% cheaper.

Creatine Supplement Review - What You Need To Know About Creatine Monohydrate

Creatine is one of the most popular body building supplements out there, and so naturally there are a lot of questions about what are the proper ways to use it. And just like everything online you’ll get different answers from different sources! Let’s go over a few of the different theories that are out there about how to use creatine.

Creatine Loading

If you’ve ever used creatine before then you’ve probably gone through a creatine loading phase. The standard loading phase would usually be to take up to 20g of creatine a day for 5 days, then back off to a maintenance dose of 5g a day. The idea here was to saturate your muscles with a bunch of extra creatine, so that when you take your daily dose after that you are just replenishing the saturation.

Supplement companies love this idea I’m sure, because by the time you’re done with your loading phase you’ve pretty much gone through your first bottle of creatine! But is it really necessary to do a loading phase?

A lot of people will tell you that it really isn’t necessary. More and more people are starting to realize that if you're going to use creatine for a longer period of time you'll get the same benefits without the loading period. And you'll save a lot of money on the first bottle of creatine as well!
There are also a lot of different creatine cycles out there. I've seen some cycles where you take it for 5 days at a time, some for 3, and some take it every day for a month, then cycle off for a while. In the end you'll have to experiment and see what your body reacts to and works for you since everyone is different.

When to Take Creatine

Another area of confusion for a lot of people is when creatine should be taken. This was a big question that I had when I very first started taking creatine. The standard suggestion has often been to take creatine soon after your workout (unless you are doing a standard loading phase, then you would take it throughout the day). Here is an article by Shannon Clark that suggests the same thing: Getting the Facts Straight on Creatine.

But there are variations to this standard approach as well. For example, if you’re going with the 3 days on 3 days off approach suggested by MuscleHack.com's Mark McManus, you would take creatine before your workout, after your workout, and then at least 2 other times throughout the day.

Once again, it would seem that you will need to experiment and see what works best for you and your body.

Conclusion

My intent in writing this article was not to come out with some kind of decisive solution as to what is the best way to get all the benefits out of using creatine. As you can see, there are several different approaches that different people have found to work for them.

What you really need to do is start with the standard approach. If you get results from that, great! Keep doing what works. If you don't get great results, try one of the other approaches and see if it works better that way. You body will react differently to this and other supplements than other people will react to it. Experiment a little and find out what works for you!

Building Muscle Mass Diet - Why You Should Avoid Sugar

According to findings recently released by the American Medical Association, the average American consumes an astounding 115 pounds of sugar per year. The kind of sugar that is found in most foods and drinks is manufactured sugar. Manufactured sugar contains virtually no vitamins or minerals and therefore in order to be metabolized the body must draw on the body's reserves of vitamins and minerals.

When the bodies natural reserves of vitamins and minerals are depleted, the natural metabolism of bad things like cholesterol and fatty acids are either impeded or slowed down. Eliminating sugar entirely from your diet is next to impossible and in fact eliminating sugar from your diet completely is actually unhealthy because your body needs some sugar to produce critical glycogen.

You can and should take in about 10% of your calories for the day in the form of sugar. On a 2,000 calorie a day diet you can consume about 50 grams of sugar per day which is about 1/3 of what the average American takes in. As much as possible though, you sugar intake should come from juices or things that are naturally flavored rather than from snacks and desserts.

Here are a few reasons why you should keep your sugar intake to a minimum:

1. Increased Sickness - In playing havoc with your body's physiology, excessive sugar can actually weaken the immune system. A weakened system inevitably leads to increased illness.

2. Robs Your Body Of Other Nutrients - To be properly metabolized by the body, sugar requires that your body rob its natural mineral reserves. This can easily lead to mineral and vitamin deficiencies.

3. Reduced Energy - In large amounts, sugar can give you a major energy boost. However, the energy boost doesn't last very long and usually leads to burn out. Burn out means that you will actually have less energy throughout the day than normal.

4. Cavities - Although unrelated to muscle building, cavities can be expensive and painful. Your dentist wasn't lying when they said sugar is horrible for your teeth. Sugar causes cavities by wearing out the enamel on your teeth.

Far and away the easiest way to reduce sugar in your diet is to simply start drinking diet soda's and sugar free energy drinks. 3 servings of the average soda contain nearly 70 grams of sugar while the average energy drink has more than 40 grams.

Benefits Of Fish Oil Supplements - Why Fish Oil Is Good For You

Fish oil was introduced several years back as a nutritional supplement for athletes and bodybuilders. Today fish oil has legions of fans worldwide who maintain that fish oil is one of the best all around supplements on the market. While this can be disputed, it certainly is true that fish oil does provide many wonderful health benefits, particularly for athletes who engage in 10 or more hours of intense exercise per week.

Fish oil is classified as an Omega 3 fatty acid which is a polyunsaturated fatty acid found in most vegetables and vegetable oils and fish such as salmon and mackerel. Fish oil supplements can be purchased at just about any vitamin or health food store or, if you are interested in saving some money and don't mind waiting a few days, can be purchased on Ebay at steep discounts.

Here are a few benefits of fish oil supplements:

1. Lower Cholesterol - While not always bad, cholesterol is the nasty stuff that causes heart attacks and other unpleasant maladies. Studies have shown that patients who took Omega 3 fish oil for 6 months had decreased cholesterol levels than those who did not have fish oil in their diet. While long term tests are still underway, it appears that fish oil may also drastically reduce the risk of heart attack and even stroke.

2. Better Skin - Fish oil can reduce or eliminate acne on your face and body and give your skin a much smoother and softer appearance. This is especially helpful for bodybuilders or even women whose hormones happen to be out of whack.

3. Relieves Joint Pain - For heavy weight lifters and hardcore runners joint pain is fairly common. Fish oil acts to reduce inflammation in the joints which means you can lift more weight and run longer.

4. Less Soreness - As the saying goes, "no pain, no gain" but with fish oil supplements you can reduce the uncomfortable muscle pain you often feel after heavy workouts with a couple caplets a day. Remember that the faster your muscles recover, the more muscle building you will be able to do.

Top Muscle Building Supplements

Building muscle requires more than just showing up to the gym everyday and lifting heavy weights. In order to achieve the best workout results possible you need to make sure that you are taking the best supplements possible. Your diet should also be very well rounded and contain plenty of carbohydrates and plenty of protein.

It has long been known that protein is the fundamental building block of muscle tissue. When you lift heavy weights you are actually causing small tears to form in your muscle tissue. Protein is what actually repairs the tears in your muscles causing your muscles to grow and develop. New tears in the muscle tissue cause the muscle to further grow and develop. Egg whites and most meats are actually great suppliers of simple protein.

While carbohydrates have been the victim of a whole lot of bad press lately they are actually essential for stamina, which is very important if you are lifting heavy weights. Carbs tend to burn very slowly and as a consequence tend to provide long lasting energy. In addition, carbs provide blood sugar stability during intense workouts. Foods including brown rice, fruits, and potatoes can provide you with more than enough carbs for an intense workout.

Like carbohydrates, fats are also the victim of smear campaigns and attack ads. In reality, if you cut out all fat from your diet you would suffer serious perhaps even irreversible health side effects. Fats are actually a necessary nutrient that, in the right amounts, can actually facilitate muscle gain. The most essential fat is monosaturated fat which aids in both boosting the immune system and bolstering energy levels.

Ultimately, regardless of what supplements you take, you need to make sure to eat properly and have a balanced diet. That being said, here are my picks for the top muscle building supplements:

Omega 3 fatty acids- Facilitates healthy growth and development

Creatine- Promotes muscle building and increases muscle mass
Whey Protein- Essential for all male weight lifters

Soy Protein- Essential for all female weight lifters

Amino Acids- Very inexpensive and reduces soreness after workouts and therefore allows you to workout more often than you normally would.

Top Three Muscle Building Supplements

After you've developed a good weight gain workout program that's designed to help you build muscle at an accelerated pace, the next step you'll want to think about is looking at the different supplement options that are available to you, both to help you with the actual workouts, and to help you recover. Muscle Building supplements come in a wide variety, so it's critical to know which ones are going to work, and which are going to drain your wallet.

Since there are a high number of supplements making promising claims, it can be misleading at times, not to mention that many people do experience the placebo effect - they start up on a supplement and think it's helping, and actually work harder as a result.

In that case, it's not the supplement that's actually doing the job, but the hard work they are putting in.

Nothing can replace hard work.

Here are the top muscle building supplements you should consider using to achieve maximum results.

Protein Powder

Since meeting your protein requirements is pretty much essential for building muscle, if you're struggling to do so, the most important muscle building supplement will then be protein powder.

Protein powder, while it doesn't have any magical properties that will magically pack on the muscle, will make it easy and convenient for you to get that protein intake up there.

It's also slightly faster absorbed, making it a good option for both before and after a workout.

Creatine Powder

Next up, creatine powder is another good supplement to consider, and has had a number of studies performed on it.

Again, creatine doesn't contain a magical formula that actually builds muscle simply by using it, but what it does do is replenish the muscular creatine phosphate stores, which are a molecule that is essential for the regeneration of ATP (which then fuels your muscle contractions during a workout).

When this high-energy ATP molecule is not being resynthesized fast enough during a workout, that's when fatigue kicks into over drive and you have to stop.

By stocking up the creatine phosphate stores through the use of creatine powder, you therefore help prevent the lack of regeneration of ATP, thus preventing early onset of fatigue.

Basically, creatine lets you work out harder, for longer. That translates to more muscle built.

Fish Oil

The third supplement which I believe to be one of the more important muscle building supplements is fish oil. Getting an adequate intake of fatty acids is critical for not only your ability to build muscle, but also for overall health.

Fish oil will also help with insulin resistance, which means your body is going to handle carbohydrates better. As anyone who's trying to build muscle knows, when bulking, carb intake can get pretty high.

If your body struggles with carb consumption, you're not in for a very fun time.

Aim to get 3-6 grams of fish oil per day - minimum. Unless you're eating plenty of fatty fish or flaxseeds on a regular basis, fish oil supplements are the next best option.

So, there you have it. No fancy concoctions, no miracle drugs, just simple supplements that over deliver.

Of course a multi-vitamin is always a good idea for everyone, but this is usually a given.

After you've been on these supplements, then you may want to consider additional ones such as glutamine, a nitric oxide powder, dextrose, and so on, but I would try and stay away from supplements that promise what seems like too-good-to-be true results.

More often than not, they are just that. Too-good-to-be-true.

Spend your muscle building supplement money wisely.

Honey: A Natural Bodybuilding Supplement

In order to complete 1-2 hour weight and cardio training sessions, malt dextrin or dextrose is consumed by many bodybuilders. These sources of carbohydrate are chosen because of their slow-burning nature, this can aid in blood glucose level management following workouts. A lot of bodybuilders are discovering that honey is a great substitute also containing additional benefits.

Honey, like dextrose, is great for increasing insulin levels in post-workout protein shakes. It not only provides a different taste (which is great in the bland world of bodybuilding nutrition), but the body also burns it slower. But honey is something that should not replace dextrose as your primary carbohydrate source after working out. After all, almost half of the calories in it derive from fructose, the carb flavor that often transforms to fat. It is a great option to keep available if you ever run out of dextrose, or if you are trying to sweeten a cheat meal, or if you're going through a bulking phase and you are craving extra calories.

You can purchase honey at any grocery store, and it can be great to have if you are on the road missing a good protein shake, and just picking up some lunch meat or other quick protein source having just worked out. Take in 1-2 tablespoons of honey with the meat to maximize the time period after working out. Fast food should never really be considered when bodybuilding, but a good meal to eat if you have to is KFC chicken dripping with honey.

Honey is also a chief provider to supplemental anti-oxidant effects on the body, so bodybuilders find it extremely helpful to assist their routine in the very important recovery time period having been through a tough workout. You want to be extra sure that you are not allergic to honey (as many are) and any bad reactions or side effects to eating honey in this manner should result in you consulting a doctor. Adding honey or using it as a substitute can have various benefits that will make your bodybuilding experience more joyful and successful.

Something to keep in mind though when choosing which honey you buy at the store is The health benefits of honey - like all foods - depend on the quality of the honey. But in this case, the situation is even more extreme, because the pollen that collects on the bees' legs as they move from plant to plant is only as healthful and as diverse as those plants. In addition, the processing of honey often removes many of the phytonutrients found in raw honey as it exists in the hive.

Raw honey, for example, contains small amounts of the same resins found in propolis. Propolis, sometimes called "bee glue," is actually a complex mixture of resins and other substances that honeybees use to seal the hive and make it safe from bacteria and other micro-organisms. Honeybees make propolis by combining plant resins with their own secretions. However, substances like road tar have also been found in propolis.

Bee keepers sometimes use special screens around the inside of the hive boxes to trap propolis, since bees will spread this substance around the honeycomb and seal cracks with the anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal resins. The resins found in propolis only represent a small part of the phytonutrients found in propolis and honey, however. Other phytonutrients found both in honey and propolis have been shown to posssess cancer-preventing and anti-tumor properties. These substances include caffeic acid methyl caffeate, phenylethyl caffeate, and phenylethyl dimethylcaffeate.

Researchers have discovered that these substances prevent colon cancer in animals by shutting down activity of two enzymes, phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C and lipoxygenase. When raw honey is extensively processed and heated, the benefits of these phytonutrients are largely eliminated.
